Fabric Building Maintainence

While fabric covered buildings are generally maintenance free, there are a few items you will want to review on a regular basis to ensure the longest possible life of your building.  With the summer storm season approaching, now is the ideal time to take a look at your building and address any potential issues.

Here is a brief check list that should take about 10 minutes to complete, but that small time investment could save you thousands of dollars in repairs.

• Check to see if the cover is tight.  There should be no wrinkles moving in the tensioned area of the fabric.  If there are, you will need to tighten this yourself, or contact an experienced contractor to assist you.   Keep in mind the tension goes both laterally and parallel so knowing what to tighten is important.
• Check the cover to see if there are any tears or stress points in the fabric.  Small tears can become big ones in heavy wind conditions.  You can get a repair kit from Accu-Steel for any tensioned fabric structure.
• If your building has cross-cabling, make sure the cable is tight.  The cable is in the building to ensure the building can withstand wind loads in specific weather conditions.  If it is loose, your investment is at risk.  Generally there is a turnbuckle to tighten the cable and does not require any special tools or expertise.
• You will want to make sure there are no tree limbs or other brush rubbing up against the fabric.  As these items blow in a thunderstorm, they can wear a weak spot in your fabric, or puncture it.
• A general inspection of connections, end walls, foundation or just a walk around the building to find any potential issues can potentially save you a lot of money.
